Destination Truth

The new season of Destination Truth started on SyFy not that long ago (just about 2 weeks ago in fact) and I've begun watching the first season on Netflix as well because I didn't know what I was missing until I caught a later season.  I have to say that of all the "truth finding" shows that are out there this one is my favorite by far.  Unlike many other shows (such as Ghost Hunters which is 2nd on my list and Ghost Adventures), this show began not hunting paranormal but hunting other legends such as Bigfoot.  It wasn't many episodes in before they did their first paranormal investigation but they still hunt more "legends" than ghosts.

One of the thing that I really like, as with Ghost Hunters (as opposed to Ghost Adventures for example) is they are truly looking for the truth.  They don't just jump to conclusions or think everything is a clue to what they are looking for but instead look to debunk the stories or the events they come across and then what they can't explain away they consider for what it is.  They use trap cameras (cameras mounted and then motion activated to take pictures), thermal cameras, night vision cameras, sound equipment, and so on to try to aid in their investigations.

They are led by a man named Josh Gates.  He is a great leader for their team which does seem to have a decent turnover from year to year.  He is humorous and seems to be a blast to be around, but he remains professional throughout.  He just seems like one of those guys that you love to work with, and much of his crew carries that same attitude.

One of the biggest reasons that I would love to work with them isn't just seeking out the truth behind all these legends but also the places they've been.  They travel all over the world, and in fact I think they even have an Antarctic trip coming up if I'm not mistaken.  They have been to the pyramids of Egypt, the Bermuda Triangle, Thailand, China, Russia, Africa, Chernobyl (yes, that Chernobyl), Easter Island ... you name it and they likely have been there.  They have seen some incredible places over the seasons.  Their travel isn't always the best though and it seems that their vehicles break down quite often.  There is one particular episode where Josh was going to go up in a plane to get an bird's eye view of the area and while in the sky the roof came off the plane.  That just seems to be the luck they have with vehicles.

As for the things they have looked for, they are also numerous.  They have done a number of paranormal investigations and some of them have been rather abnormal.  One such investigation was an underwater one and they got some rather interesting audio recordings in that one.  These also had two of the creepier events I've seen on the show, one being on an island that is covered with dolls to appease the spirits there and during part of the night as one of the crew leans in to look at a doll it opened its eyes.  Now I'm sure that it was likely just pure coincidence in the timing and a breeze or a shift in the weight somehow caused it but it was creepy none the less.  The other they were investigating in a forest type area and during one point a crew member was sitting in the middle of the clearing, legs crossed and alone doing an EVP session when suddenly he was pulled up and backwards.  I watched it a few times and I just don't think it would be easy (or maybe not even possible) to push oneself from sitting cross legged to practically leaping backwards as he did.  Just another mystery left unsolved.

My favorite of the ghost investigations has to be the one in Prypiat, Ukraine near Chernobyl.  It was pretty neat watching them go through all the different checkpoints that are set up denying traffic into the massive area, then seeing the buildings and the like in their current state.  They even managed to get a thermal hit that was very interesting along with some other odd events.

As for the non-ghost hunting they have done, there have been a number of investigations they have done.  There have been a few Bigfoot or Bigfoot type creatures they have looked into in a couple areas.  They have even found some hair that couldn't be identified and managed to find a print that certainly seemed to fit many that others have found as well.  They have also looked into dinosaur like creatures such as an Iguanadon in Papua New Guinea and a pterodactyl type creature in Zambia, lake monsters such as Nessie in a few places, mermaids, giant octopuses, swamp apes, UFOs, the mystery of the Bermuda triangle, werewolves, leprechauns, banshees ... and the list goes on.

About the only thing that I would like to see differently is to have the investigations be a bit longer.  Generally there is some interviewing witnesses/locals, then the investigation begins and goes most of the way through the night, and then they break down and are headed home.  In a number of cases there are huge areas to cover and sometimes one night just isn't going to produce much of anything.  In some of these cases I would love to see them camp out wherever they are and do their investigation not only for one night but the next day and the following night as well.

However that is about the only thing as I said that I would like to see done a bit differently.  Overall the show is extremely entertaining, has good humor from the crew, goes to some incredible places, and investigates some very interesting reports and creatures.  They even manage to find some intriguing evidence from time to time.  If you have SyFy check it out as new episodes continue to air, and if you don't check out past seasons on Netflix or wherever you may find them.
