Tron, Hereafter, 127 Hours

Yet another weekend has passed and we got the chance to watch a few more movies.  This week I got to check out the new Tron, then watched "Hereafter" which I knew little about going into it, and we also got to see why all the awards were talking about "127" Hours and James Franco (or as you'll come to read, we didn't get to see why in my opinion).  Without further ado, here are my brief thoughts on those movies.

I'll start with "Hereafter" staring Matt Damon and some other people.  Honestly this movie moved much too slow, didn't really make you care about the characters, and the story lines while tied together in the end seemed much too independent of each other for the most part to give the movie any fluidity.  The premise behind the movie was ok, that the characters who suffered near fatalities became aware of the spirit world and could communicate with spirits, however in doing so they led difficult and lonely lives.  However it wasn't necessarily well done either and added little to the movie.  The movie had a good idea behind it but wasn't well done, and with characters that you don't care about and a plot line that is broken and slow this movie is worth skipping.  There are much better attempts to show "communication with the hereafter" than this one.

Next up I'll go to "127 Hours".  This movie got a lot of award nominations and honestly I don't really get why.  The story, which tells a story based on actual events, is about a guy who goes out hiking by himself without telling anyone where he is going.  He ends up getting trapped in a canyon by a rock that fell and trapped his hand, and for the next 127 hours he sat there trapped before finally cutting his own arm off below the elbow and making his way out of the canyon where he was found by other hikers.  Overall the fill was ok, but it was a bit slow and dull at times and the swapping between "home video" and production video was a bit annoying.  Franco was ok in the role but it was nothing spectacular either, and the story as a whole while a great survival story made for a bit of a boring movie.  It wasn't bad and is worth watching at some point, but no need to rush out to see it and certainly there were plenty of better movies and performances this past year in my humble opinion.

I'll finish up with "Tron: Legacy".  As a follow up to "Tron" from so many years ago, the story is about a young man who while being the main stock holder for his father's company instead rebels against the company and the board denying what his father who had disappeared so many years ago left behind.  One day a stockholder gets a page from "his father" at the old arcade he owned and the son goes to check it out.  At the arcade he finds his fathers workshop and is pulled into the virtual world his father had created.  From there it is a story of the boy finding his lost father, rebelling against the computers, and escaping back out of the digital world.  I won't say much more than that because I don't want to spoil much for those that watch it.  I really enjoyed the story and while the characters don't have a lot of depth I didn't mind so much in this movie.  The visual effects are well done and the races were fun to watch as well.  Overall I really enjoyed the movie, and while it may not appeal to those that aren't fond of SciFi movies to begin with it is worth checking out and for those that do enjoy SciFi it is certainly one you should see.
